The Collective, is a secretive organization co-founded by Ken Thompson and Karl Fischer for the purpose of furthering both Ken and Karl's goals, while giving them a shared pool of resources to utilize.

Summary

Having already known Karl from his younger days, Ken approached Karl with the idea of establishing a group to progress the sciences, most importantly those involving psionics. Karl, coming from a wealthy family with resources of the mundane and magical agreed on the condition that Ken assist him with his own pursuits. Despite his disbelief in Magic, Ken agreed and the two established The Collective.

The organization had a slow start, using Karl's wealth and both his and Ken's contacts the pair begun to gather what they needed, and recruit members. Eventually, the pair were able to have an underground facility constructed to act as their main headquarters, as well as Ken's main laboratory, and Karl's main study. At some point, Ken had taken the steps to begin planning an experiment to create the ultimate psionic Meta-Humans. With genetics and cloning not being his area of expertise, Ken began to search for someone new to bring on board for the project. Meanwhile, he was also in need of a maternal donor for the project, someone who's DNA held the potential to mix with his own and produce suitable offspring. During the process, Karl himself had suggested Ken utilize Monica Beaufort for both jobs, with her coincidentally being not just a skilled geneticist, but also someone who's DNA was a perfect match for Ken's own. She also happened to have been one of the few remaining members of a old family of sorcerers that had long since lost their mystical knowledge, which Karl had hoped might make the children more magically inclined for his own purposes.

At some point, Ken's scientists was able to get a hold of the sole surviving Mutanoid that had crash landed on the North American continent. They took it back to their labs for study.

The psionic children project eventually begun, and was considered (at the time) a great success. This of course changed when years later the children decided to escape their makers. Furious, Ken began the process of attempting to recover them, while also making the final preparations for the completion of his third child.

Notes

• Ken and Karl have over the years begun to tolerate each other less (mostly due to Ken), and will likely reach an eventual breaking point.
• Although The Collective's science division primarily focuses on psionics, they also study other sciences of all kinds.
• Karl runs his own half of the organization focused on Magic. Although it's much more secretive, and Ken knows almost nothing of what it's doing while Karl knows essentially everything Ken does.
• The Collective is in the favor of Meta-Human supremacy, but doesn't shy away from hiring members that are regular humans if they seem capable enough.
