== Summary ==
A collaborative project between several government and private groups, including [[H.O.M.E.L.A.N.D.]], [[M.I.N.D.]], and [[wikipedia:NATO|NATO]], Project: M was spun off from funding for the [[wikipedia:Human Genome Project|Human Genome Project]] for the purpose of more fully understanding the [[Meta-Gene]] so that it could be weaponized in the scenario that the Cold War between the [[wikipedia:United States of America|United States]] and its allies and the [[wikipedia:Soviet Union|Soviet Union]] went hot. Of particular concern to the founders of the organization was the West's lack of effective combat response in the scenario of the newly unveiled Soviet asset [[Starshina]] being deployed in an active combat zone.

Officially dedicated to mapping and exploring the Meta-Gene, Project: M eventually secretly dedicated itself into studying various methods through which [[Meta-Human]] subjects could be enhanced.

Primarily based around enhancing Meta-Human soldiers through the use of cybernetics, participants in Project: War Dog were stripped of their previous identity and granted new ones with positions within the combined [[wikipedia:NATO|NATO]] armed forces, with the armed forces they ended up in being selected depending on their country of origin. Once officially integrated, members of Project: War Dog were assigned to the War Dog unit of the NATO Allied forces.

Although they have since been retired, the War Dogs are the only Project: M subjects to have officially seen active combat.
